Purpose
Cabinetmaking has a long history as a handicraft tradition. Cabinetmakers work produce furniture, wood articles and interior furnishings made of wood and wood-based materials. Cabinetmaking shall contribute to covering the demand for specially-made interior pieces and furniture, as well as meeting society's need for repairs and restorations.
Learning in the subject shall help the apprentice gain insight into the special qualities of wood, and the continuation of the ancient craft of cabinetmaking. Learning in the subject shall also contribute to the development of new techniques and the use of new materials and machines. Furthermore, learning in the subject shall stimulate design, product development and cooperation with customers and designers.
Training completed and passed in the subject will lead to an examination for a Journeyman's Certificate in the trade. The professional title is Cabinetmaker.
Structure
Cabinetmaking consists of two main subject areas. The main subject areas complement each other, and should be viewed in relation to one another.

Main subject areas
Production
The main subject area covers the entire working process and the development of handicraft skills in cabinetmaking. Use of different materials and traditional or recent methods for joining and different surface treatment techniques are all included in the main subject area. The main subject area also covers the use of computerised machines and tools. Quality control and current regulations concerning environment, health and safety are also included.
Product design
The main subject area covers designing products and technical solutions based on sketches, models and working drawings. Selection of materials and surface treatments adapted to the products and to national and international requirement standards are included in the main subject area. The main subject area also covers communicating with customers and suppliers, as well as documentation and estimating the costs of own production.
Basic skills
Basic skills are integrated into the competence aims for this course in areas where they contribute to the development of and are a part of the basic subject competence. In Cabinetmaking, basic skills are understood as follows:
Being able to express oneself orally and in writing in Cabinetmaking involves using technical language when communicating with suppliers, customers, co-workers and other collaborators. It also involves presenting own work.
Being able to read in Cabinetmaking involves the use of working drawings, instructions, user manuals, specialised trade literature and descriptions.
Numeracy in Cabinetmaking involves calculating material and time consumption, surface area and volume units, as well as production costs. It also involves using geometry, functions and equations in drawings and constructions.
Digital literacy in Cabinetmaking involves using digital equipment in design work, drawings and production. It also involves gathering information, participating in professional networks and using digital tools to present and documentation own work.

The aims of the studies are to enable pupils to- evaluate, sort and prepare materials for certain products based on the structur of the wood
- glue solid wood, laminate and veneer sheets to product materials
- make traditional craftsman's joints
- use different techniques and materials for joining wood pieces together
- present products and product parts using traditional hand-held tools and machines
- use computerised tools and machines in own production
- prepare, adapt and mount different types of furniture fittings and mountings
- prepare suitable surface treatment agents and use different methods for application of these
- do quality assurance for own products according to the technical requirements and aesthetic norms for the cabinetmaking trade
- evaluate the need for and carry out maintenance on machines, tools and equipment
- comply with current regulations for environment, health and safety
Product design
The aims of the studies are to enable pupils to- develop products using sketches, models and digital programs
- make working drawings and select production methods based on the wood's special characteristics
- read architectural drawings and select production methods that meet requirements and specifications
- select suitable materials and surface treatments for different products
- select fitting and mountings with suitable form and function for different products
- communicate with customers and suppliers
- document time and material consumption in own production
- calculate and reckon prices for own products
- give an account of current provisions in the Norwegian Working Environment Act
- give an account of national and international standards and quality requirements for furniture and interior work
