Purpose

A roughneck's education is the starting point for all activities related to the petroleum industry. The subject shall contribute to covering society's needs for effective and safe extraction of oil and gas from such fields. Furthermore, the subject shall contribute to developing of competence in exploration drilling, production and maintenance of production and injection wells. Work is done in critical and demanding climates, weather and working conditions, with high demands on a worker's health and functional physical abilities. The subject shall contribute to upholding high standards for environment, health and safety.

Learning in the subject shall be organised so the apprentice can develop a holistic understanding of the trade and the practical skills and professional insight into drilling and preparing a well. Furthermore, learning in the subject shall promote the ability to develop professionally and use new technology. Learning in the subject shall also contribute to developing the individual's ability to make decisions and work with precision and responsibility.

Learning in the subject shall organise varied training in skills for using and maintaining surface equipment and in-well equipment with an emphasis on security and performance. Furthermore, learning shall arrange for an exchange of experience and cooperation across professional groups in an international environment. Learning in the subject shall emphasise environmental awareness, an understanding of safety and knowledge of Norwegian, and international standards and guidelines.

Training completed and passed in the subject will lead to a Trade Certificate. The professional title is Roughneck.

Structure

Roughnecking consists of two main subject areas. The main subject areas complement each other, and should be viewed in relation to one another.

Drilling and drilling equipment

The main subject area covers activities included in drilling of exploration, outstep, production and injection wells. Furthermore, the subject covers the use and maintenance of drilling equipment. Environment, health and safety are central themes of this subject.

Well tools

The main subject area covers maintenance of well tools for leakage testing. Furthermore, the subject covers barriers related to well boring, wellhead installation and well workover services.

Basic skills

Basic skills are integrated into the competence aims for this course in areas where they contribute to the development of and are a part of the basic subject competence. In Roughnecking, basic skills are understood as follows:

Being able to express oneself orally in Roughnecking involves communicating risk assessments and professional solutions in Norwegian and English.

Being able to express oneself in writing in Roughnecking involves preparing reports in Norwegian and English.

Being able to read in Roughnecking involves using procedures, job descriptions and regulations.

Numeracy in Roughnecking involves making calculations related to drilling activities. It also involves taking measurements and completing registrations according to drawings, schedules and standards.

Digital literacy in Roughnecking involves using digital control systems and documentation systems for drilling activities.

Drilling and drilling equipment

The aims of the studies are to enable pupils to
  • plan and perform drilling floor work in line with current rules and regulations
  • elaborate on the principles of risk assessment and carry out risk assessments related to own work
  • do control checks on well safety valve equipment on the drilling floor for the ongoing operation
  • perform frontline maintenance on mud pumps and mud equipment
  • perform frontline maintenance on drilling equipment, derricks and drilling floor
  • use and maintain handheld and portable drilling equipment
  • give an account of the technical properties of drilling equipment
  • prepare safety reports and experience reports and recommend corrective measures
  • discuss and elaborate on professional solutions in Norwegian and English

Well tools

The aims of the studies are to enable pupils to
  • maintain mechanical plugs and valves, and give an account of how these work
  • give an account of barriers related to well drilling, wellhead installation and well workover services
  • maintain wellhead wear bushings and give an account of how these work
  • give an account of the functions and areas of use for different kinds of running tools, strings (cement strings etc), drilling jars and through-tubing tools
  • give an account of how casings and risers are used in wells, and explain how these work
  • give an account of the functions and areas of use for coring equipment
  • give an account of the functions and areas of use for directional drilling equipment
  • maintain and use mud and sludge systems

All apprentices shall sit for a Trade Examination, which is normally carried out over a period of three working days.

The provisions for assessment are stipulated in the regulations of the Norwegian Education Act.
