Competence aims after Year 4

The pupil is expected to be able to

  • use hand tools and joining techniques for wood, clay, and textiles in an environmentally conscious and safe manner
  • explore ideas and possibilities using reused materials and communicate to others how everyday practices can help care for nature and the environment
  • apply art and design processes by seeking inspiration, exploring possibilities, making choices, and creating products
  • investigate how traditional crafts, including Sámi crafts, utilise the properties of natural materials and use this knowledge to create simple functional objects
  • discuss the use, function and choice of materials in different buildings and create sketches proposing new architecture
  • interpret shapes and symbols from different cultures and use them in visual expressions
  • create shape and depth in drawing using visual principles such as overlapping and size diminution
  • use basic principles of composition in photography and digital tools
  • explore diversity in motifs and visual expression in art from different parts of the world and create a digital presentation
  • communicate and present own work through an exhibition

Formative assessment

Formative assessment shall help to promote learning and develop competence in the subject. Pupils demonstrate and develop competence in Art and Crafts in Years 3 and 4 when they experiment with craft techniques, digital tools, visual expressions and participate in creative processes. They also demonstrate and develop competence when they talk about what art, objects and buildings communicate about people’s thoughts and needs.

The teacher shall facilitate for pupil participation and stimulate the desire to learn through varied practical tasks and opportunities for pupils to express thoughts and opinions through creative processes. The teacher shall have conversations with the pupils regarding their development in art and crafts. Pupils shall have opportunities to try things out. Based on the competence pupils demonstrate, they shall be given opportunities to articulate what they feel they are able to do and what they can do better than before, both in terms of process and product. The teacher shall provide guidance on further learning and adapt instruction so that pupils can develop their competence in idea development, problem solving in materials, visual communication and discussion of crafts and cultural expressions.
