Cost of kindergarten provision and primary and secondary education

Every year, local authorities and county councils spend large sums on education. During the 2021 fiscal year, local authorities and county councils spent in the region of NOK 166 billion on kindergarten provision and primary and secondary education.

In addition, municipalities, county municipalities and private schools were allocated a total of NOK 1.2 billion to handle the challenges associated with the Coronavirus pandemic.

Norway spends over 40 per cent more on primary and secondary schools than the average spend for OECD countries. Measured as a proportion of the GDP, it corresponds to 4.6 per cent of the country's value creation in 2019.
