Mathematics year 1-10 (MAT01‑06)
Relevance and central values

Mathematics is an important subject for understanding patterns and relationships in society and the natural world through modelling and the application of mathematics. Mathematics aims to contribute to pupils’ development of a precise language for reasoning, critical thinking and communication through abstraction and generalisation. Mathematics prepares pupils for entry into a society and working life that is constantly evolving by equipping them with exploration and problem-solving skills.
All subjects are designed to help give pupils a strong foundation for learning. Critical thinking in mathematics includes the critical evaluation of reasonings and arguments and can empower pupils to make their own decisions and take a stand on important questions both in their own life and in wider society. Once pupils are given the time to think, reflect, reason mathematically, ask questions and experience the relevance of mathematics to their lives, the subject enables creativity and innovation. Mathematics helps pupils to develop their ability to work independently and to collaborate with others through exploration and problem solving, and it can help pupils to become more conscious of their own learning. Affording pupils the opportunity to solve problems and overcome challenges on their own contributes to the development of perseverance and independence.
