Art and crafts (KHV01‑02)
Relevance and central values

Art and crafts is a central subject for developing practical skills, creativity and reflection on visual and material culture. Through participating in aesthetic processes, pupils shall gain experience in imagining what does not yet exist, and acquire a foundation for participation in cultural and societal development. The subject shall prepare pupils for the demands of everyday and working life in terms of innovation competence, practical skills, and the ability to make aesthetic and ethical choices. Collaboration with local cultural life, business and industry shall help connect pupils’ creative work to relevant contemporary issues.
All subjects shall help the pupils to understand the value system for learning. The enjoyment of making, curiosity and responsible participation are fundamental values for both society and the individual. Artistic and cultural expressions introduce new perspectives and are significant for personal development. Pupils shall gain experience with a varied range of Norwegian, Sámi and international art, design and crafts. Shared frames of reference and tolerance for cultural diversity are developed through reflection on how identity is expressed in images, art, architecture and objects. Knowledge of and experience with art and craft traditions and intangible cultural heritage provide a basis for safeguarding and stewarding the further development of cultural heritage, as well as caring for the environment.
