Purpose
Wooden boatbuilding has long traditions. This trade shall be a culture bearer by upholding, developing and renewing a traditional craft. Wooden boatbuilding shall help ensure sustainable communities along the coastline and protect cultural heritage along the coast by ensuring that the wood boat builder makes, maintains, repairs and restores wooden boats. The subject forms a part of the local, national and international maritime environments.
Learning shall emphasise practical work with materials, tools and techniques, and help develop handicraft skills. Learning in the subject shall help preserve traditional handicrafts and lay the foundation for insight into and understanding of the special qualities of materials used by the wood boat builders. Learning in the subject shall also stimulate design and inspire new ideas, creative use of materials and construction and use of modern equipment.
Training completed and passed in the subject will lead to a Trade Certificate. The professional title is Wood Boat Builder.
Structure
Wooden boatbuilding consists of three main subject areas. The main subject areas complement each other, and should be viewed in relation to one another.

Main subject areas
Drawing
The main subject area covers knowledge of boat forms expressed through drawing. The main subject area deals with making sketches and simple working drawings, using freehand and digital tools, and making models of the product. The main subject area also covers the making of full-scale models of all or part of the boat. The main subject area also covers the history of wooden boatbuilding.
Production
The main subject area covers the use of old and new techniques, development of skills and use of materials, tools, machines and equipment. The production of boats made of wood and installation of equipment and parts is included. The main subject area also covers technical solutions and how to prepare for production. The main subject area also covers estimating costs and prices. The main subject area includes current regulations for environment, health and safety, routines for internal control and documentation of own work.
Maintenance
The main subject area covers assessment of the need for maintenance, repairs and restoration. The main subject area also covers practical work based on these perceived needs. The main subject area also covers cost estimates for maintenance, repairs and restoration.
Basic skills
Basic skills are integrated into the competence aims for this course in areas where they contribute to the development of and are part of the subject competence. In Wooden boatbuilding, basic skills are understood as follows:
Being able to express oneself orally and in writing in Wooden boatbuilding involves communicating with customers, colleagues, supplier and other collaborators about the construction process. It involves using technical language in professional discussions and presenting own work.
Being able to read in Wooden boatbuilding involves understanding and using trade literature, working drawings and instruction manuals.
Numeracy in Wooden boatbuilding involves reckoning estimates for material consumption and time used, surface area and volume, and costs for production. It also involves using geometry, trigonometry, functions and equations for drawings and for doing calculations for basic constructions.
Digital literacy in Wooden boatbuilding involves gathering information and presenting own work. It also involves understanding and drawing the wooden boat as product.

The aims of the studies are to enable pupils to- use working drawings and tables in Wooden boatbuilding
- make full-scale designs of different parts of the boat
- make models based on drawings and designs
- make freehand drawings and simple models for preparing production
- select forms and surface treatments and substantiate your choices based on use and aesthetics
- give an account of local distinctive features of wooden boats and put these in a national and international perspective
Production
The aims of the studies are to enable pupils to- handle and store wood materials for the coming production
- sort wood by quality and the wood's use, including other materials
- use tools and techniques adapted to different materials, ergonomics and time to be used
- use mechanical and chemical joining methods adapted to the actual use of the boat
- use different sealants and methods for sealing
- make boat riggings for different uses
- perform woodwork in conjunction with the technical installations
- do maintenance on tools, machines and equipment
- do surface treatments adapted to materials, areas of application and the environment
- calculate the costs for your own production
- carry out and document work in accordance with current regulations for environment, health and safety and routines for internal control.
- give an account of and comply with current regulations for wooden boatbuilding
Maintenance
The aims of the studies are to enable pupils to- evaluate the condition of wooden boats and prepare a maintenance programme for these
- evaluate and state the need for repairs and restoration, and describe what work is involved
- perform different kinds of repairs to wooden boats
- do maintenance work adapted to materials and the type and use of the boat
- estimate the costs for maintenance, repairs and restoration
