Purpose
Well drilling and rigging, coiled tubing shall lay the foundation for practicing a vocation in national and international oil industries. The subject shall contribute to covering society's needs for effective and safe extraction of oil and gas from such fields. Coiled tubing, which rests on large reels and can be thousands of metres long, is used for maintenance and completion of oil and gas wells. Work is done in critical and demanding climates, weather and working conditions, with high demands on a worker's health and functional physical abilities. The subject shall contribute to upholding high standards for environment, health and safety, and quality in the industry.
Learning in the subject shall lay the foundation for the apprentice to develop professional insight and practical skills in work with well maintenance and completion. Furthermore, learning in the subject shall contribute to developing responsible, precise and independent skilled workers with the ability to develop further in the profession in line with new technology. Learning in the subject shall also contribute to developing cooperation, interpersonal and communication skills.
Learning in the subject shall organise varied training in skills for using and maintaining surface equipment and in-well equipment, and in the use of pressure control equipment. Furthermore, this subject shall help the apprentice learn to work independently and cooperate across professional groups in an international environment. Learning in the subject shall emphasise an understanding of safety and knowledge of Norwegian and international standards and guidelines.
Training completed and passed in the subject will lead to a Trade Certificate. The professional title is Drill Operator for Coiled Tubing.
Structure
Well drilling and rigging, coiled tubing consists of two main subject areas. The main subject areas complement each other, and should be viewed in relation to one another.

Main subject areas
Coiled tubing and in-well equipment
The main subject area covers all links in the process, from unloading equipment to execution and documentation of coiled tubing operations. Procedures, current legislation and environment, health and safety are included in the main subject area. Furthermore, the subject covers maintenance systems for the equipment.
Pressure control and safety barriers
The main subject area covers the use and maintenance of different pressure control equipment. Operational procedures, current legislation and environment, health and safety are also included in the main subject area.
Basic skills
Basic skills are integrated into the competence aims for this course in areas where they contribute to the development of and are a part of the basic subject competence. In Well drilling and rigging, coiled tubing, basic skills are understood as follows:
Being able to express oneself orally in Well drilling and rigging, coiled tubing involves communicating professional solutions in Norwegian and English with colleagues and clients.
Being able to express oneself in writing in Well drilling and rigging, coiled tubing involves preparing job procedures and reports in English and Norwegian.
Being able to read in Well drilling and rigging, coiled tubes involves understanding and using work descriptions, operational procedures, regulations and internal information.
Numeracy in Well drilling and rigging, coiled tubing involves making calculations related to different coiled tubing activities, taking measurements and registration of procedures based on drawings, tables and standards.
Digital literacy in Well drilling and rigging, coiled tubing involves using digital control systems, gathering documentation from the company's data system, network-based communication and reporting, as well as handling data pooling during the operation.

The aims of the studies are to enable pupils to- plan work tasks and carry out risk assessments
- do functions tests and controls on coiled tubing equipment in line with procedures
- maintain hydraulic equipment
- service a coiled tube unit
- select and use surface and in-well equipment according to drawings and work procedures in English and Norwegian
- select the placement of coiled tubing equipment and set up the equipment
- give an account of the basic elements in an in-well tool string
- prepare and maintain a basic tool string before and after operations
- prepare reports in Norwegian and English
- give an account of official requirements for health for workers on the Norwegian continental shelf
- perform work in line with company and client quality assurance and safety systems
- plan work in line with current rules and procedures, report non-conformance and recommend improvements
- prepare final documentation for finished work and recommend corrective measures
Pressure control and safety barriers
The aims of the studies are to enable pupils to- perform systematic maintenance and functions tests on pressure control equipment according to current procedures
- give an account of how pressure control equipment works, and explain its limitations
- service equipment for well controls in line with procedures and current rules and regulations
- give an account of the well's structure, with an emphasis on safety barriers (line-of-defence)
- interpret signals and returns from the well, and handle these in line with current procedures for pressure control and rules for environment, health and safety
- assess and log pressure control operations
