Purpose

The programme subjects cover the building, operation and maintenance of gardens, parks, recreational areas and sports facilities. The programme subjects shall provide the basis for a professional vocational practice that safeguards the needs of society and different user groups in accordance with the principles for universal design.

The programme subjects shall help develop an understanding of how vegetation and materials can constitute an aesthetic and functional whole for different user groups. Teaching in the subjects shall provide an environment in which the pupil can develop practical skills, an understanding and general way of thinking in connection with commercial enterprise, vocational practice and nature. Teaching shall offer the individual an opportunity to experience excellence and realise one’s strengths and weaknesses via diverse vocational practice, where the work is carried out under varying natural and climatic conditions and requires flexibility in relation to different user groups.

Teaching in the programme subjects shall pave the way for varied assignments involving different types of facilities relevant to the industry. The teaching shall provide an environment in which the pupil shall develop skills that can be applied in traditional and modern businesses, in cooperation with local industry and organizations. Teaching in the programme subjects shall provide the basis for lifelong learning and help develop technical understanding and professional vocational practice. This includes ethical norms and the individual’s responsibility for promoting a safe and meaningful workplace. The programme subjects shall pave the way for further professional training in landscaping or as a sports facilities operator, or for general studies in agriculture, fishing and forestry.

Structure

The programme area for Landscaper and Sports Facilities Operator consists of two programme subjects. The programme subjects complement each other, and should be viewed in relation to one another.

Description of the programme subjects

New installations

The programme subject covers the building of different types of parks, gardens and recreational areas, and the establishment of sports facilities. It also deals with planning, with a view to optimal operation and maintenance. This includes the selection and working up of materials, plans, drawings, surveying and finances. In addition, it involves the choice of machines, tools and equipment, where current regulations and relevant standards play a key role. The programme subject covers the use of vegetation in different types of facilities, where emphasis is on areas of use and geographical and climatic conditions. The programme subject deals with the way vocational practice and environmental impact interrelate in the broadest sense. Emphasis is on cooperation with others, ecological understanding and consideration for life.

Operation and maintenance

The programme subject covers the operation and maintenance of facilities and organization of recreational and leisure areas. This includes knowledge of materials, and the cleaning and maintenance of materials. The programme subject also covers plants and correct care of plants under different environmental and climatic conditions. Choice, use and maintenance of machines, tools and equipment related to different operational and maintenance assignments are included. The programme subject also covers operational and maintenance plans and relevant regulations.

Teaching hours

Teaching hours are given in 60-minute units.

Basic skills

Basic skills are integrated into the competence aims for this course in areas where they contribute to the development of and are part of the subject competence. In Landscaper and Sports Facilities Operator studies, basic skills are understood as follows:

Being able to express oneself orally in Landscaper and Sports Facilities Operator studies involves communicating with others and proposing and discussing professional choices and solutions in the execution of assignments. It involves communicating with the public and users of the various facilities.

Being able to express oneself in writing in Landscaper and Sports Facilities Operator studies involves reporting and documenting clearly to clients and cooperation partners.

Being able to read in Landscaper and Sports Facilities Operator studies involves understanding simple tenders, specifications, operator manuals and relevant regulations. It means reading and understanding trade literature.

Numeracy in Landscaper and Sports Facilities Operator studies involves calculating length, area, volume and weight in connection with different work operations. It also means being able to deal with budgets in connection with planning and operations.

Digital literacy in Landscaper and Sports Facilities Operator studies involves communicating, retrieving and exchanging information and performing calculations digitally. It also involves using work-relevant digital tools and instruments.

The aims of the studies are to enable pupils to
  • plan and execute assignments in new installations in accordance with relevant regulations, standards, plans and specifications, and assess and document their own work
  • use digital tools in planning and reporting
  • choose and use tools, machines and equipment according to relevant regulations and standards
  • use surveying instruments in new installation work
  • choose and use materials based on their qualities and limitations
  • evaluate the suitability of different types of soil for growing vegetation and take measures to improve the quality of soils for specific purposes
  • use growing media and add nutrients and soil improvement agents in their correct amounts
  • identify common plants in different types of facilities and use plant material based on physiological and environmental requirements
  • manage and use soil for different purposes
  • assemble relevant installations and structures according to relevant standards and principles for universal design
  • use ecological terms and explain cycles in nature
  • elaborate on the significance of climate for the building of different types of facilities
  • describe the organization of a company starting with type of organization and an organizational chart
  • elaborate on the competitive situation and changing framework conditions in the branches
  • carry out work on new installations with a view to finance and use of resources, and in line with relevant regulations and standards
  • explain the connections between quality in workmanship and subsequent maintenance work on facilities

Operation and maintenance

The aims of the studies are to enable pupils to
  • work in accordance with operation and maintenance plans for different types of facilities, constructions and installations
  • prepare simple maintenance plans
  • repair and maintain different types of surfaces
  • take care of plants and vegetation in facilities, recreational areas, and natural and cultural landscapes
  • carry out maintenance on solid and loose surfaces
  • identify common garden pests and enemies and evaluate countermeasures
  • evaluate and implement measures to prevent erosion
  • choose and use tools, machines, equipment and chemicals for operation and maintenance assignments
  • plan and carry out work with a view to maintaining good economy and resource use
  • explain how choice of methods in maintenance work affects the living conditions of flora and fauna and the environment in its broadest sense
  • communicate with various users of facilities and provide good service

The provisions for assessment are stipulated in the regulations of the Norwegian Education Act.
