In addition the same requirements apply to the application process as described in Processing the application – how to apply and Documentation requirements.

The required documentation to be attached to the application is listed chronologically in the application form. This is the complete list of required attachments. In this list you are asked to add a number – ascending through the list. These numbers must be added to all the copies. The listed documents shown in the application thereby corresponds to the numbers added on each document attached to the application form. The requirements correspond essentially to those stated in the section Especially for teachers.

To apply for recognition as a mother tongue teacher the applicant must document their proficiency in Norwegian. To be approved the applicant must satisfy one of the following requirements:

  • Norwegian (as a second language) in upper secondary school, 3rd year with the mark 2 or better/Norsk som andrespråk i videregående skole 3. klasse
  • The Norwegian Language Test – Advanced Level with a score of minimum 450 points/ Test i norsk, høyere nivå (Bergenstesten) med minimum 450 poeng
  • Level 3 in the Introductory Programme for Foreign Students at the Universities/ Trinn 3 i norsk for utenlandske studenter ved universitetene
  • One Year Programme in Norwegian Language and Civilization for Foreign Students/ 1-årig høgskolestudium i norsk språk og samfunnskunnskap for utenlandske studenter

These requirements are consistent with the Norwegian language requirements made by The Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service, NUCAS (Samordna opptak), for persons with foreign qualifications who wish to seek admission to higher education at Norwegian educational institutions.

Alternatively, in some cases other documentation may be considered sufficient. This may be considerably long and relevant work experience in Norway.

For the sake of clarity, please notice that the "Norskprøve for voksne innvandrere" (2 og 3) is not accepted as sufficient to meet the requirements for proficiency in Norwegian.

If the applicant cannot document proficiency in Norwegian according to the criteria described above, the applicant will not be approved.

Please note that applicants who wish to be considered for approval as a mother tongue teacher should indicate this in the application form. Also, documentation of proficiency in Norwegian must be attached to the application form.
